  • The Virginia State Capitol is home to the oldest English speaking legislative body in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Pocahontas was baptized here and lived with her husband, John Rolfe, in Chesterfield County.
  • Richmond's Braves are the farm team for the Atlanta Braves.
  • Eskimo Pies are made in Richmond.

landmark dates

  • 1607: Richmond was founded.
  • 1775: Patrick Henry makes his "Give me liberty, or give me death" speech at St. John's Church at the 2nd Virginia Convention.
  • 1780: The capitol of Virginia moved from Williamsburg to Richmond because of the belief that the British would find Richmond inaccessible because of its position on the James River.
  • 1861: Richmond is named the Capitol of the Confederacy.
  • 1865: Confederate troops burn supplies to prevent them from getting into Union hands. Much of the city was destroyed and had to be rebuilt after the war.
